The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

Si Zhu received her BS degree as an Outstanding Graduate in Optoelectronics from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China in 2015. She is currently a PhD student in Photonics Technology Center, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) under the supervision of Professor Kei May Lau. She has been working on the project of a III-V on silicon photonics platform for quantum dot laser with low threshold and high temperature stability and received the School of Engineering Annual Top PhD Award in the second year. Her research interests mainly focus on the monolithic integration of long wavelength III-V semiconductor quantum-dot lasers, and micro- and nano-cavity opto-electronic devices on silicon.

A III-V on Silicon Photonics Platform for Quantum Dot Lasers with Low Threshold and High Temperature Stability

Si Zhu's latest research work is on developing long-wavelength quantum-well and quantum-dot lasers in various cavities on silicon for a monolithic photonic integration, including Fabry-perot lasers, micro-disk lasers and micro-ring lasers. Those lasers were fabricated with InP-based laser structures on hetero-epitaxial high-quality InP on a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible Si platform, which is compelling for monolithic integration of optoelectronics, and provide the combined strength of the mainstream mature InP-based photonic integrated circuits (PIC) technologies and large-volume, low-cost silicon-based manufacturing foundries.
